Valley City State University men's basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky has announced the signing of Anthony Saavedra, a 6'4' Forward, from Monticello (MN) High School and Jason Perkins, a 6'4' Forward, Shakopee (MN) High School to letter of intents to play for the Vikings in the 2011-2012 season.
In his senior season at Monticello, Saavedra averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds per game. Anthony was named to the Mississippi 8 All-Conference team and recently competed in the North Central All-Star Game in Bemidji, Minnesota where he led his team with 25 points and earned game MVP honors. Coach Bruce Balder-Lanoue, Anthony's high school coach says, 'Anthony was a great player on the court who understood what it meant to be a great teammate. Although we will miss him in our program, I am excited for Anthony to be able to take the next step in his career and play at VCSU.'
Coach Jeff Kaminsky comments on Saavedra, 'I am really looking forward to having Anthony in our program. The first thing that stands out when you talk with anyone who knows Anthony is what a quality person he is and the positive impact he has on others. On the court he will bring a physical presence that should have an immediate impact in our program.'
Shakopee High School's Perkins will be an outstanding addition to the program. Kaminsky comments on Jason, 'His versatility to score inside and outside made him an extremely difficult matchup in high school. We look forward to that added versatility on our roster. Jason was not only the primary inside scorer for his high school team, but also shoots the three extremely well. Jason is an excellent basketball prospect and is the type of student and individual that we know will be successful and represent our program well.'
According to Coach Kugath, Jason's high school coach, 'Jason can play at the next level. He was our leading scorer and rebounder. He can score inside and is probably our best three-point shooter. He is a good kid and works hard. He will be a great addition to your program.' Jason averaged 16.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game his senior year of high school and scored a season high 33 points against Waconia on December 17, 2010.
Saavedra and Perkins will join Grant Lindahl, Cando, ND who signed to play with the Vikings earlier in the recruiting season.
