VCSU president Dr. Steve Shirley recently presented the President's Distinguished Service Award to Ray Braun. This award, the highest honor that the president can bestow, was established to recognize partners and friends for their exceptional contributions toward the university's vision. The individuals recognized are strong supporters of VCSU, its programs and goals. In VCSU's history, only 16 other individuals have been recognized with the President's Distinguished Service Award.

Ray was recognized for his tireless and significant support for VCSU. He has been a long-time member of the Century Club, is a founding, 15 year member of the VCSU Foundation Board of Directors, and is a founding member of the VCSU Foundation Investment Committee. Ray is also a regular at Viking Athletic events, especially Viking basketball and football, and rarely misses a game.

Ray was a managing partner at Ludvigson Braun & Company, a CPA firm in Valley City which, for over 60 years, has provided a variety of accounting and financial services including tax preparation, audit representation, and payroll reporting, and has also been a strong supporter of VCSU. For the last six years, he has been serving in an advisory capacity.

He was born and raised in Strasburg, ND and attended Dakota Business College and the University of North Dakota. He has been actively involved in the community over the years serving in various official capacities in Saint Catherine's Church, REACH, the Chamber of Commerce, the Republican Party, the Valley City Town & Country Club, the Board of Mercy Hospital, and the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corporation. He is presently a director of Tri W-G, Inc., and has various commercial real estate interests in the community. He has three grown children: John (VCSU '94), Chris, and Rae Marie.

He was presented with the award at the Regent's Lunch on June 13, 2011. In addition to Mr. Braun, the University recognized donors that achieved new levels of lifetime giving including DuWayne Bott (Platinum Level - $250,000 - $499,999) , the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corporation (Diamond Level ($100,000 - $249,999) , Lafarge Dakota (Gold Level - $50,000 - $99,999) , Leevers Super Valu (Regents Level - $25,000 - $49,999), and Taco John's - The Bob Bergan Family (Regents Level - $25,000 - $49,999).
