FB: Vikings vs. Comets Preview II

Valley City State has won seven games in a row and is currently ranked #16 in the nation. Mayville State enters this week's contest with a 4-5 record and the Comets are coming off a huge win last week against Dickinson State. It is the first time in 20 years that the Comets have beaten the Blue Hawks. In the previous meeting against the Comets three weeks ago, the stat lines turned out fairly similar, 395 yds for VCSU to 335 for MaSU, even though the score was lopsided 52-20 in the Vikings favor. The Most meaningful stats were the four fumbles that that the comets lost to the Vikings and the five TD's scored by LeTheo Proctor (SR, Anchorage AK). Even though VCSU has had control of the series, the Viking vs Comets game is a significant one for several reasons. VCSU needs a win to stay in the hunt for a national playoff berth and the Comets are two wins away from a winning season. The Vikings have dominated the series of late against the Comets winning each meeting (11) in the last decade. The last time Mayville defeated the Vikings was 1998, but the Comets have ended one losing streak already this season and are looking to do the same this week. If the Vikings can win out they should be in a good position to secure one of the 16 spots in the NAIA playoffs.

The Vikings have been tough to stop on offense this season behind solid play at quarterback from Tommy Zinke (JR, Rolla ND), big plays from Proctor, and powerful running from A.J. Pfeifer (SR, Buffalo ND). The offense is tied together by the offensive line that has helped the Vikings to rank 26th in rushing offense, 20th in passing offense, and has allowed the 7th fewest sacks in the NAIA this year.

Mayville is featuring a new offense with defensive back Dom Bradley now in the backfield running the ball. Mayville will be attempting to shorten the game by running the ball with Jake McLain, who leads the Comets in passing and rushing, and controlling the clock as they did is last week's win against Dickinson.
