VALLEY CITY (NewsDakota.com)–Tight end Ken Eliacin (Jr., Miami, FL) caught three touchdown passes and the Viking defense held enough ground for a 28-14 win over Mayville State at Shelly Ellig Field and Lokken Stadium in Valley City Saturday.

Tommy Zinke (Jr., Rolla, ND) hooked up with Eliacin seven times for 127 yards and three scores, and finished the day 16-22 for 246 yards and four total scores, hitting LeTheo Proctor (Sr., Anchorage, AK) for a score as well.

A resurgant Comet crew rushed for 254 yards, but threw for only 52, and scored both of their touchdowns after the Vikings entered halftime with a 21-0 lead. Dominique Bradley (Soph., Spring Valley, CA) carried 23 times for 112 yards and two scores. Quarterback Jake McLain (Sr., Chadron, NE) carried 19 times for 87 yards.

The opening possessions laid the groundwork for the game. The Comets drove the ball from their own 26 to the Viking 38 over 10 plays, with the drive ending on a ball from McLain batted down by the Viking defensive line.

On the next play, Zinke dropped a beautifully thrown ball into Eliacin's arms in stride for a 68-yard strike, putting the Vikings into a 7-0 lead. The play was the only first quarter play of the Viking offense, with the Comets stalling after 13 plays on their next drive.

Valley City State then drove 12 plays, with Zinke hitting Proctor on a back-corner fade for a second score. The Vikings finished the half with a 25-yard toss from Zinke to Eliacion for a 21-0 edge at the break.

The Comets got on the board after a botched Viking fake punt set them up on VCSU's 47. Bradley ran in from two yards out, cutting the lead to 21-7. The Vikings responded with a drive that followed a failed Comet onside kick, with Eliacin scoring on a 13-yard pass from Zinke. The Vikings led 28-7 with 6:21 left of the third.

The Comets scored a second time when Bradley capped a 14-play march with a two-yard run with 12:25 left of the game. The Viking defense then stalled the Comets the rest of the way while the offense ran the clock out for a 28-14 win.

McLain finished just 5-12 passing for 52 yards and two interceptions. Viking runner A.J. Pfeiffer (Sr., Buffalo, ND) 16 carries for 78 yards.

The Vikings have now won eight straight games, and will travel to Robert Morris for the regular season finale next Saturday.
