VALLEY CITY (–The departure of Dickinson State to the Frontier Conference brings two new opponents, and one less home game, to the Viking football schedule in 2012.

Gustavus Adolphus of St. Peter, MN, and Lindenwood University of Belleville, IL will be new destination games for the Vikings in 2012, joining a list of opponents that will again include two games with Mayville State and Jamestown College, and single games with Dakota State, South Dakota Mines, Morningside College, and Robert Morris, IL.

Valley City State will open with a Friday night game in Sioux City, IA at Morningside IA, a fellow NAIA opponent. The Mustangs defeated the Vikings in Valley City 35-17 in the 2011 season opener. Morningside was the most successful regular season opponent of the Vikings a year ago, finishing 9-2 and losing a first-round playoff game to St. Francis, IL.

The Viking's home opener will be Saturday, September 8th, hosting Mayville State at 1:00 p.m. The rematch will take place in Mayville on October 6th.

Two straight road games will follow, with the Vikings playing a later-afternoon game in Madison, SD against Dakota State on September 15th. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff. September 22nd is the first of two games with Jamestown College, with the initial game in Jamestown. The rematch will be October 20th in Valley City.

South Dakota Mines comes to Valley City September 29th. The Vikings then travel two straight weeks for the second time, going to Mayville the following week, then to St. Peter, MN to meet Gustavus Adolphus. The last meeting between the Vikings and Gusties was in 2005, when Chad Lueck (Sr., Lidgerwood, ND) hit Justin Folk (Jr., Milbank, SD) for a scoring pass and the lone touchdown of the game in a 10-3 Viking win.

The Vikings come home to meet Jamestown College the following week, then travel to Belleville, IL for a matchup with Lindenwood University. The Lynx are adding football as a sport for the first time in 2012, and will host the Vikings on a maroon-and-grey turf field October 27th. The Lynx are applying for NAIA membership in athletics this year. The Vikings will then host Robert Morris University of Chicago, IL, a team that was a startup program a year ago, on November 3rd.

Valley City State won the final Dakota Athletic Conferece (DAC) title last year, finishing 6-0 in league play, 9-2 overall, and they made their first playoff appearance since 2001.
