On Saturday April 14th, 2012 the Viking Men and Women competed in the Bison Invitational at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.
The women's' team embraced the warm weather and elite competition as many Vikings competed well with a National qualifier. Amber Volanti had an outstanding day as she won the javelin throw. Her stand out performance of 39.30 meters (128'11'') not only earned her 1st place, but it also qualified her for the NAIA outdoor national championship meet. After her qualifying performance, Amber remarked, 'I'm excited to get the opportunity to compete at Nationals again. With another year of experience, I hope to better my 8th place finish of last year and be an All-American.' Volanti also finished 8th in the hammer, throwing 34.18 meters (112'02'').
Summer Romine placed 4th in the high jump with her effort of 1.48 meters (4'10 ¼'') while Karlie Thompson led the Viking women in the shot put with her 6th place finish and a mark of 11.25 meters (36'11'').
The Viking Men responded to the competition with exceptional performances from each side of the track. Sprinter, Philip Reuer, once again had a great day with his 7th place efforts in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. His times of 11.27 and 22.77, respectively, are both career bests for Phil, disregarding his wind aided times the week prior. These times earn Phil a spot on VCSU Track & Field Top Ten Performers Honor Roll for both events. Derek Elliott, finishing just behind Reuer, placed 8th in the 200 meter dash with his time of 22.99. Both sprinters, with the addition of brothers, Jermaine and Justin Erby, composed the 400 meter sprint relay which ran a 43.60 and took 2nd. Justin Erby, achieving a time of 58.45, placed 7th in the 400 meter hurdles.
Middle distance runners, Wayne Engelhard and Tanner Hovland, also had a break through meet with their efforts in the 800 meter dash. Engelhard placed 3rd in the event with his time of 1:55.90, which is a career best for Wayne. Tanner Hovland following Wayne's lead in the 800m finished 6th with a time of 2:00.05.
It should also be noted that Derek, Wayne, and Justin performances also now ranks them on VCSU Track & Field Top Ten Performers Honor Roll for their events. Wayne also anchored the 4X400 meter relay made up of Hovland, Elliott, and Kinsly Tarmann. Their time of 3:27.64 placed them 3rd.
The VCSU Distance runners Richard Wright, sophomore, and Jose Garcia, junior, fared well with their performances in the 5000 meter run. Richard's time of 16:21.30 earned him 3rd and Jose earned 7th place with his time of 17:07.67.
Darien Moore upheld his undefeated status in the outdoor shot put, taking home a 1st place and setting a new school record with his throw of 16.87 meters (55'4 ¼''). Moore also placed third in both the discus and hammer with throws of 46.75 meters (153'04'') and 55.08 meters (180'08'') respectively.
