The Valley City State University women's golf team ended their season today when they finished the second round of the AII national qualifier tournament. The event was held at the Antelope Golf course in Prescott, Az. The golf meet was the first AII tournament the team has participated in. The team competed against ten other schools from around the country. The tournament's team and individual winners qualify for the national meet held in Greenville, Tennessee May 15-18.

The tournament consisted of a practice round on Saturday followed by two rounds of intense pressured filled golf. Temperatures were in the mid 80's with winds ranging from 0-20 mph. The first round saw a couple of firsts. Mandi Bindas was able to play her first competitive round of golf as she has been recovering from an ACL injury that was sustained the first week of school. The other first was the team was at full strength for the first time all season. After Saturday's round of competition, the Vikings were able to see what kind of competition is out there around the country.

Ashley Hinrichs was as consistent as she has been all year. The junior shot an 83 for the round. It was good for a tie at 25th place after the first round. Lacey Nelson shot a personal best 87 on the day, which was good for 28th. Mandi shot a 97 for the day and Kayla Brockman ended her day with a 123.

Bomstad said, 'I thought it was a pretty good day for us. The weather was perfect. We don't get to see many 85 degree days without wind. Ashley played her game. Lacey played her best round ever. Mandi was able to get her feet under her for the first time all year and Kayla played through a tough round. I was very proud of how they played today!'

The second round saw another super day of golf. With the weather in the low 80's, Hinrichs played another strong round scoring an 85. Mandi Bindas bounced back during her round and shot a 92. She scored a 41 on the back. It was her best 9 hole stretch of the season. Lacey played another solid round with a score of 93. She had her best two day score of the year. Kayla Brockman had a bit tougher day as she struggled with some tough lies and bad luck to end her round with 128.

'I thought this weekend was a real learning experience for us. This is the first time our team has traveled farther than 230 miles to compete. We were able to see where we are as a program and where we need to go to compete for national meets. I think it was definitely a step in the right direction. It is sometimes hard to gauge when you are playing the same teams and golfers every meet. This gave us a new perspective and I thought for the most part we rose to the occasion,' commented Bomstad.
