VCSU opened up their season at home with a race at the Valley City Country club Friday August 31st. The golf course offers an excellent venue to host both a college and high school cross-country meet. The course also incorporated a 1200m loop that ran alongside and under the Highline Bridge.

In the men's college division, Jose Garcia finished 5th overall with a 17:01 time for the 5,000m. Jose paced himself in the first mile, which enabled him to pass more than a dozen runners in the closing mile of the race. Jose was closely followed by teammate Richard Wright in sixth place with a time of 17:05. Freshmen Malik Jackson also broke into the top ten, finishing 9th with a time of 17:16. The men's team showed solid depth with only :24 seconds separating the first man from the fifth man. The Viking men finished second place as a team.

The female Viking Harriers were led by Anna Fuka in finishing 4th over the 4,000m course with a time of 15:38. Anna ran a smart race as she constantly worked her way up throughout the race from a top 15 position at the mile mark, to a top ten spot at 1.5 miles. Fuka set herself up to passing a number of runners in the last 800m to finish in 4th place. Summer Romine, racing her first cross-country race ever (Romine is a high jumper on vcsu track & field team), finished 21st with a time of 16:47. VCSU's third runner was Krista Briss finishing 31st with a personal record time of 17:10, which is a :21 second improvement.

VCSU also hosted a high school cross-country meet before the college races began. Alex Askerooth a senior from Sargent Central high school took first place in the varsity boy's race with a time of 13:55 for the 4000m course. Kyle Schumacher, of Jamestown high school, finished with a time of 14:04, following him and rounding out the top three was Michael Sorenson, also of Jamestown finishing in 14:55. Jamestown took the team title with a score of 28.

In the girls' varsity race, local standout runner April Berntson grabbed first place with a time of 12:04 for the 3,000m course. Two Jamestown runners, Maya Moltzen and Rachel Morin, running 12:19 and 12:30 respectively finished second and third. Valley City High School won the team championship with a score of 27.
