Valley City State has established itself as a nationally competitive basketball program as shown by the #24 ranking the Vikings garnered in the 2012-2013 preseason NAIA Basketball Poll.

The 2011-2012 season was the third twenty win season in the past five years and the Vikings narrowly missed out (by one spot in the final poll) on a bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The Vikings finished the season 20-10, were ranked in the Top 25 for seven consecutive weeks, and were ranked as high as #17 for two weeks.

With 10 returning players from last year's team, including All-American guard, Sekani Milligen and All-Conference players John Raquel and Aaron Duske, the Vikings will look to improve upon last year's 20-10 record. This year's schedule features challenging NAIA competition both nationally and within the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) as well as an NCAA Division 1 opponent, North Dakota State University, and four NCAA Division 2 opponents. Mixed into the schedule are three tournaments, a trip to New Mexico and Colorado and a holiday trip to California.

The Vikings open their 2012-2013 march toward a NAIA National Tournament bid this Friday as they travel to Northwestern College in Iowa for a battle of pre-season Top 25 teams. The Red Raiders were tabbed as number seven in the NAIA Pre-season Poll. Valley City State will finish opening weekend with a game at Dordt College (IA) on Saturday.
