The Valley City State University Men's Basketball team, tabbed #24 in the pre-season NAIA Basketball Poll opened their season with a 76-70 victory at #7 ranked Northwestern College (IA).

The Vikings struggled to start their season, shooting only 27.6% from the floor in the first half to trail the home team by a halftime score of 38-28.
A second half surge however led the Vikings to their first victory of the season and an upset of the number seven team in the country. In the second half, Valley City State shot 48.6% from the floor and outscored Northwestern College 48-32 to steal the victory.
Valley City State was led by sophomore guard AJ McDonald who dumped in a game high 28 points on 8-14 shooting from the floor and 9-15 from the free throw line. Senior Sekani Milligen contributed 21 and Gus Kueber tallied ten to round out the Viking double digit scorers. Dillan Ostrom pulled down 11 rebounds for the victors.
The Vikings (1-0) will finish their opening weekend Iowa road trip with a 6:00 pm tip-off at Dordt College. Live video of the game can be found at the link below.
