The Valley City State University Women's Basketball team used a big second half run to hang on for an eight point victory, their first of the season at Dordt College.
Trailing 55-44 in the second half, the Viking defense clamped down and the offense took over to finish the game with a 27-8 run to outlast the Defenders on their home court and pick up a 71-63 win.
Valley City State shot over 50% in each half but their second half run was fueled by defense. The Vikings stifled the Defenders leading scorer Kara Van Dyke and allowed her only two points after she scored 15 in the first half. They also forced the Defenders into 28 turnovers in the game converting them into 26 points.
Brittany Lehner led three Vikings in double figures scoring 20. Katelyn Ralston added 13 and Sierra Even chipped in with 12 off the bench.
With their first win of the season the Vikings stand at 1-1 and will play their home opener on Friday, November 9 when they host NCAA Division II Minnesota State University Moorhead. Tip off is set for 7:00 PM at the W. E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
