The number 17 team in the nation jumped out to a big halftime lead before fending off the host team in the Whittier College Tournament by a 73-69 score to win their tenth game of the year.
Valley City State shot 58.6% in the first half including 10 of 16 for 62.5% from the three point line in the first half to jump out to a 47-28 lead at the break. They would need all of that in the second half as the hot shooting cooled to the tune of 31.0% and 0-9 from the three point line.
Whittier College made a charge in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 41-26 but Valley City State was perfect from the free throw line in the game, going 11-11 from the charity stripe including 8-8 in the second half.
Gus Kueber led the way for Valley City State recording a double-double, scoring 22 points including a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line and pulling down 10 rebounds. Sekani Milligen and Aaron Duske scored 15 and 14 points respectively to round out the double digit scorers for the Vikings.
