In a defensive battle marred by fouls and free throws, neither team could find an offensive rhythm as the 19th ranked Mayville State University Comets defeated #24 Valley City State University 70-59 on the campus of Mayville State.
The Viking limited Mayville State to 25% shooting in the first half and led 28-23, but the Comets started the second half on a 20-7 run and the Vikings couldn't recover.
Statistically the Vikings were better but the Comets shot 41 free throws to Valley City State's 12. Mayville State connected on 32 of those free chances to seal the game and hand the Vikings their sixth loss of the season.
Brittany Lehner led the Vikings , scoring 18 points on six of ten shooting and added six free throw in six attempts. The only other Viking in double figures was Courtney Titus who chipped in with 11.
The loss drops the Vikings to 18-6 on the season and is their second straight loss to a NAIA top 25 opponent after the #15 Jamestown College beat Valley City State on Wednesday.
The Vikings will return to action on Wednesday, February 6 when they look to avenge their loss at Jamestown College. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm at the Jamestown Civic Center.
