The Valley City State University took Mayville State University best shots in the first half and trailed by six points at the break before an offensive barrage in the second half saw the Vikings come away with the upset over the 15th ranked team by an 85-79 final score.
The Comets shot made ten three point shots in the first half and shot 66.7% from the arc to jump out to the 46-41 lead at the break.
Then the Vikings went to work offensively and defensively. Valley City State outscored the Comets 30-13 in the first ten minutes of the second half and led by 15 points with nine minutes in the game. Mayville State would not go down easily.
The Comets battled back and took a 76-75 lead with 3:50 remaining on a pair of free throws by Marisa McMillin. Then it was Alyssa Hummel time for the Vikings.
Hummel led a final 10-3 run by the Vikings to close out the home victory by scoring six straight points for Valley City State. By the time Hummel was done, the Vikings led 81-78 and never looked back.
Hummel scored 24 points to lead the Vikings and was followed by fellow post Brittany Lehner with 19 as the only two Vikings to score in double figures in the game. The Vikings as a team shot 55.7% from the floor for the game.
It was the first win in three tries versus the rival Comets and gave the Vikings their 21st victory of the season versus six losses. It also ran the Vikings win streak to three in a row.
Valley City State closes out their regular season in search of their fourth win in a row when they host A.I.I. opponent Dakota State on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
