It took until the second to last week of the season, but the Valley City State University Viking Softball team finally played at home and they enjoyed the comforts of Shelly Ellig Field, sweeping rival Mayville State by scores of 8-5 and 10-9.
With their regular field unplayable due to late spring snow storms, the Vikings moved to Shelly Ellig Field at the Lokken Football Stadium and played on the turf.
In game one, the Vikings scored two in the home half of the fifth and three in the sixth to outscore Mayville State to claim game one. The Vikings took advantage of eight free passes off of Mayville State pitching and Courtney Shadlock went two for three and drove in three runs to help lead the Vikings in the win.
Samantha Nalley picked up the win in the circle going all seven innings, striking out five and walking one.
Game two turned into a slugfest as the Comets rallied from a seven to one deficit, scoring six in their half of the fourth to tie the game at seven a piece. Each team traded two more runs sending the game into an extra inning before Shadlock hit a two RBI double to push the Vikings to a 10-8 lead. The Comets plated one in the bottom of the eighth before the Vikings closed the door for the sweep.
Four Vikings, Adrianna Boychuk, Liz Hall-Sewell, Katarina Boychuk and Shadlock, tallied three hits each in the game as the team tallied sixteen in the game.
Shadlock knocked in five runs in the game to complete an eight RBI performance on the day. Valley City State swiped eleven stolen bases in game two.
Torri Fenton threw four strong innings before being relieved by Sam Nalley who threw the last four innings for the Vikings. The Viking hurlers combined to throw seven strike outs and allow only one free pass.
Valley City State will host the Comets on Friday at noon and 2:00 pm again at Shelly Ellig Field.
