The #4 seed Valley City State University Viking Softball team knocked off number five seed Dakota State in the opening round of the Unaffiliated-A.I.I./Frontier National Qualifying Tournament 11-6, then dropped a tough one to #1 seed Dickinson State 3-1.

Valley City State was outhit by the Lady T’s in the tournament opener 12-11, but the Vikings cashed in on their scoring opportunities scoring five runs in the first and two in the second on their way to the convincing first round victory.

Hilary Kulczewski led the Viking offense with a three for four performance at the plate. Savannah McMillin and Brittany Lehner each collected two hits with Lehner also knocking in three runs for the Vikings.

Mackenzie Hamre and Courtney Shadlock also collected two RBI each.
In the circle, Samantha Nalley picked up the win, scattering twelve hits across seven innings, walking four, striking out seven and surrendering four earned runs.

The timely hit evaded the Vikings versus the tournament host and number one seed Dickinson State Blue Hawks in the second round. Valley City State scored one run in the top of the third inning to stake claim to an early lead, but then would leave seven runners on through the first four innings, failing to break the game open.

The Blue Hawk offense finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth versus Nalley and the Viking defense, plating three runs for the eventual game final of 3-1.

The Vikings out hit their counterpart, tallying nine hits in the game to Dickinson State’s five. Liz Hall-Sewell, Savannah McMillin and Courtney Shadlock all collected two hits each for the Vikings.

Nalley was the tough luck loser on the mound, giving up three earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out three.

The Vikings drop to the loser out bracket where they will face #6 seed Mayville State University in the first Loser-Out game on Saturday morning at 10 AM Mountain Time, 11 AM Central.
