MADISON, S.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) was picked as the preseason favorite in the 2013 North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Preseason Volleyball Poll. The preseason poll was voted among the league coaches.
The NSAA is the newest conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), established last April.
Jamestown, which finished 27-9 overall record in 2012, tallied five first-place votes and 25 points to earn first place in the preseason poll. The Jimmies qualified for the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round last year after finishing runner-up in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Postseason Tournament.
Mayville State (N.D.) was picked second with 18 points, followed by Valley City State (N.D.) with 14 points, Dakota State (S.D.) 13 points and Presentation (S.D.) 5 points.
The 2013 NSAA volleyball season will consist of eight conference matches with five teams competing for the conference crown. The NSAA Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament play kicks off on Nov. 2. The NSAA volleyball championship match is scheduled for Nov. 9 at the highest seed remaining.
Sarah Becker, a senior middle blocker from Jamestown, was selected as the NSAA Volleyball Preseason Player of the Year voted by the conference coaches.
Valley City State's defensive specialist Emily Plowman (So., Simi Valley, Calif.) and middle hitter Aurissa Martens (Sr., Manitou, Manitoba) were among the players named to the NSAA Preseason Volleyball Team.
Dakota State’s Kelci Viesselman and Stacey Schuller, Jamestown’s Kelsey Deragisch and Sarah Becker, Mayville State’s Josette Glatt and Presentation’s Megan Goedert were also named to the NSAA Preseason Volleyball Team.
The 2013 volleyball season kicks off this Friday with Mayville State facing Waldorf (Iowa) and Viterbo (Wis.). Jamestown and Valley City State each will take on Waldorf and Viterbo on Saturday at Jamestown College.
