The Valley City State volleyball team opened the season with a 1-1 weekend at the Jamestown Triangular on Saturday.

The Vikings dropped a 3-0 match to a very solid Viterbo team to open the season, but bounced back with a come-from-behind five-game victory over Waldorf College.

Aurissa Martens led the team with 16 kills as the Vikings rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Waldorf 25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9 in their second match of the day. Alley Theroux and Kaitlyn Heuring each added eight kills apiece in the victory. Defensive specialist Emily Plowman came up big with five service aces and 15 digs.

In their opening match of the season, VCSU was swept by Viterbo, 21-25, 19-25, 13-25. Martens led the Vikings with 10 kills and Theroux added eight in the loss.

Up next: Valley City State continues the season with another tournament Friday and Saturday at Northwestern College (Iowa). The Vikings will take on Morningside College, Dordt College, Northwestern College and Doane College.
