Valley City State was swept by University of Jamestown Wednesday night in the first North Star Athletic Association volleyball match for both teams.

Jamestown improved to 9-4 on the season with a 25-21, 29-27, 25-19 road win over the Vikings. Valley City State is now 4-8, and 0-1 in the North Star.

Riding a capacity home crowd the Vikings jumped out to an early lead in game one, but the Jimmies rallied through the middle points to pick up a 25-21 win. Game two was the highlight of the night, with both teams going point-for-point down the stretch before Jamestown finally pulled out the nail biter 29-27. The Jimmies made it a sweep with a controlling 25-19 win in game three.

It was the first of eight conference matches for both teams. The 2013 North Star schedule consists of home and away matches between Valley City State, University of Jamestown, Mayville State, Dakota State and Presentation College. Jamestown was picked by coaches as the preseason favorite.

The Vikings were led by Aurissa Martens offensively. The senior captain finished with 11 kills and a .214 hitting percentage. Kelsey Labodi added seven kills. Emily Plowman had four service aces and 17 digs to lead the team. Stephanie Miller added three aces and 11 assists.

Up next: The Vikings hit the road for the Peru State Claws Out Challenge. VCSU will play four matches on Friday and Saturday in Nebraska.
