Valley City State welcomes the Dakota State Trojans to Shelly Ellig Field Saturday night at 6 p.m. for the Vikings’ 2013 home opener.

It is the first ever North Star Athletic Association game for each team. Valley City State enters with a 1-1 record, coming off a 56-28 loss to No. 1-ranked Morningside College (Iowa) last Saturday. In the season opener, Valley City defeated University of Jamestown 31-14.

Dakota State is off to an 0-2 start this season, losing 56-21 to Peru State and 14-13 to Dordt (Iowa).

The Viking have won six straight games against the Trojans.

Valley City State’s Derek Elliott has been one of the top offensive threats in the nation so far this season, racking up 266 yards rushing and two touchdowns in last week’s loss to Morningside. Elliott, a senior from Valley City, ranks in the Top 5 in the NAIA in rushing yards, rushing yards per game, and all purpose yards.

Freshman quarterback Kurtis Walls is expected to make his third straight start for the Vikings. Walls has been steady in the first two games, completing 50 percent of his passes for 344 yards and four touchdowns. He has not thrown an interception. Walls has quickly developed chemistry with a trio of receivers. Of his 25 completions, 19 have gone to receivers James Gaynor, Colby Lum and Cedric Chappell.

Defensively, the Vikings have seven players with between 16 and 21 total tackles. Senior captain Jake Thurston leads the team with 10 solo and 11 assisted tackles.

For Dakota State, offense has been lacking. The Trojans are averaging just 238 yards per game. Quarterback Cole Whisenhunt leads the team with 93 yards rushing, but has also thrown six interceptions in two games.
