Elliott earns 2nd straight NSAA Player of the Week honor

MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) announced its third weekly football player-of-the-week honors. Derek Elliott earned his second consecutive player-of-the-week honor in guiding Valley City State (N.D.) in the first ever NSAA football conference victory over Dakota State on Sept. 14. Dylan Torgerson of Mayville State (N.D.) and JT Petsch of Jamestown (N.D.) were also named to the football’s player-of-the-week honors.
NSAA Football Offensive Player of the Week: Derek Elliott – Valley City State (N.D.) – 6’1”, 211 lbs., Senior, running back – Valley City, N.D – Elliott racked up a total of 229 all-purpose yards in helping the Vikings to the first-ever NSAA conference victory over Dakota State (S.D.). He recorded four touchdowns, all in the first quarter including a 55-yard touchdown reception and a 66-yard touchdown run. With 165 rushing yards versus the Trojans, Elliott eclipsed over 2,000-yards in his career and is currently fourth in VCSU record book with 2,150 career rushing yards. He currently ranks first in all of NAIA football in all-purpose yards (603), total rushing yards (534) and total scoring (44 points). It was his second straight week that he had received the weekly honor.
NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week: JT Petsch – Jamestown (N.D.) – 6’4”, 190 lbs., Senior, defensive back – Mesa, Ariz. – Petsch was a leader for the Jimmies’ defense. He recorded eight tackles (four solo tackles and four assist tackles) with one tackle-for-loss in 13-7 home loss to Wisconsin-Stout. Petsch had an interception and a pass break-up. He leads Jamestown in tackles with 39 tackles this season. He ranks 38th in the nation in tackles (all positions) with 9.8 tackles per game.
NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week: Dylan Torgerson – Mayville State (N.D.) – 5’10”, 180 lbs., Freshman, kicker – Kallispell, Mont. – Torgerson kicked two onside kicks that Mayville State recovered (one was negated due to a penalty) to help Comets earn a 13-6 home victory over Haskell (Kan.) – a game that featured over an inch of rainfall. He had three kick-offs for a total of 124 yards, including a long kick-off of 57 yards. Torgerson had five punts for 135 yards (he had a long punt of 39 yards). He converted 1-of-2 PAT kicks in the win.
Looking Ahead: The NSAA conference schedule continues Saturday as Presentation (S.D.) plays their first-ever conference game on Saturday. The Saints will host Dakota State – Trojans’ second NSAA conference game this season – in the night cap with a kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Swisher Field in Aberdeen. Three other NSAA members will play a non-conference game with two games in the evening on Saturday.
