Valley City State and Mayville State tangled in a five-game thriller Tuesday night at Graichen Gymnasium but at the end of the night it was the Comets who came out on top.

Two games went to extra points as both teams battled, but Mayville won the match 24-26, 28-26, 25-11, 21-25, 15-11.

Valley City State drops to 8-12 overall and 1-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. Mayville State improves to 9-12 overall and 3-1 in the North Star.

The Vikings played some of their best volleyball of the season Tuesday night, pulling out a tight 26-24 win in game one. In game two, VCSU trailed early but battled back. Trailing 23-21, the Viking scored five of the next seven points to go up 26-25. The Comet would rally as well, scoring the final three points to win the game and even the match.

In game three it was all Mayville State as the Comets picked up a 25-11 win. But the Vikings bounced back once again in game four with a stellar performance. VCSU racked up 21 kills while committing just one attacking error in a 25-21 win, ending it with two booming kills from Aurissa Martens.

The Vikings led 3-1 and 7-6 in the decisive game five, but Mayville would score the next four points to take the lead for good.

Martens led Valley City State with a season-high 18 kills in the match. Alley Theroux put together a great night for the Vikings, picking up 15 kills while committing just two attacking errors. Barbara Ector also reached double-digit kills with 11.

Freshman setter Megan Good had 34 assist and three service aces, and setter Stephanie Miller had 30 assists. Libero Emily Plowman had 23 digs to lead the Vikings.
