The Valley City State football team suffered just its second loss of the season Saturday, falling 14-9 during a low-scoring slug-fest at Mayville State University.
Valley City, ranked No. 16 in the NAIA, drops to 4-2 overall.
VCSU led 3-0 after marching down the field and scoring on a Thomas Cortez field goal early in the game.
Mayville State answered back to go up 8-3 in the first quarter, and from there it was a battle. VCSU got a 3-yard touchdown run from Derek Elliott to go up 9-8 in the third quarter, but Mayville State would answer back with a touchdown of their own to lead 14-9.
VCSU had the ball numerous times with a chance to go ahead, but their offense sputtered out and an interception in the final two minutes sealed the victory for Mayville State.
It is the first time since 1998 that VCSU has lost to Mayville State. The Comets improve to 4-3 this season.
Elliott led the Vikings with 167 yards rushing and a touchdown. Quarterback Kurtis Walls, who is Top 10 in the nation in quarterback efficiency, struggled for really the first time all season. Walls completed 11 of 30 passes for 99 yards and threw his first two interceptions of the season.
Zach McBeain led the Viking defense with 14 total tackles.
Mayville State racked up yards on the ground. Jerril Jenkins and Dominic Bradley each had 126 yards rushing and Bradley scored both of Mayville's touchdowns.
Up next: VCSU will try to bounce back Saturday, Oct. 19, with a 1 p.m. home game against Gustavus Adolphus.
