The Valley City State football team lost its first home game of the season Saturday, falling 42-21 to NCAA Division III opponent Gustavus Adolphus College.
No. 22-ranked Valley City State drops to 4-3 overall after losing its second straight game.
Gustavus scored two touchdowns in the first quarter for an early 14-0 lead. Valley City answered back on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Kurtis Walls to Derek Elliott late in the second quarter. But in a huge momentum swing, Gustavus quarterback Mitch Hendricks found Cole Engen in the corner of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown with four seconds remaining in the first half.
Gustavus took a 21-7 lead into halftime and extended it out to 35-7 late in the third quarter behind the strong running of Jeffrey Dubose. The Vikings would add two touchdowns in the fourth on a 16-yard run by Elliott and a 30-yard pass from Walls to Colby Lum.
Elliott ended the day with 30 carries for 141 yards and a touchdown. He also added six receptions for 61 yards and another touchdown. Walls completed 14 of 27 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns while throwing one interception.
Dubose led the Gusties' offensive attack with 203 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 34 carries. Quarterback Mitch Hendricks completed 13 of 20 passes for 102 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers.
Linebackers Fontayne Fuga (11 tackles) and Austyn Flores (10 tackles) led the Viking defense. Dwanye Fearon and Zach McBeain added nine tackles each.
