The Valley City State men's basketball team dropped to 0-3 on the season Thursday with a 73-64 loss to Viterbo University.

The V-Hawks (2-0) are receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Coaches' Poll and played like it by stifling the Viking offense in the first half.

The Vikings shot 35 percent from the field (18-for-52), including just 29 percent in the first half. Valley City trailed 31-22 at halftime, and never got any closer in the second half. The game saw 60 total fouls called and 76 attempted free throws.

Valley City was led by 16 points from AJ McDonald in the loss. Jeremy Ware added 13 points off the bench and Aaron Duske scored 11. The Vikings made just 6 of 29 3-point attempts, and three of those makes came in the final minutes of the game.

Viterbo was led by 18 points from Matt Turba and 13 points from Alex Diciaula. The V-Hawks made 6 of 11 3-point attempts.

Valley City is now 0-3 after season-opening losses to Dordt College (100-93) and Northwestern College (80-72) last weekend.

Up next: Valley City State is on the road at University of Minnesota-Crookston on Tuesday, Nov. 12 as part of a men's and women's doubleheader. The Viking women (0-2) are in action this weekend during a tournament at Concordia University (Neb.).
