Valley City State (N.D.) swept the final North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Football Players-of-the-Week honors, announced Monday. Derek Elliott was selected to the offensive award, while his teammates Matt Craft was named to defensive award and Thomas Cortez to special teams award.
NSAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Derek Elliott – Valley City State (N.D.) – 6'1" – 210 lbs, Senior – running back – Valley City, N.D. – Elliott had set numerous records in Valley City State's 37-12 home victory over Mayville State (N.D.) to clinch a share of NSAA football conference title. He rushed 44 times for 286 yards with two touchdowns for the Vikings. Elliott tied VCSU's school-record for most rushing yards in a single game. He set school records in a single season for most rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and all-purpose yards.
NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Craft – Valley City State (N.D.) – 6'0" – 275 lbs., Senior – defensive line – Fairbanks, Alaska – Craft tallied a total of five tackles (4 solo tackles and an assist tackle), including 2.5 tackles-for-loss of 9 yards to help the Vikings earn a share of NSAA Football conference title with 37-12 home victory over Mayville State. He was a big part of the Viking defense that limited the Comets to 52 rushing yards in the game. Craft added a forced fumble in the game.
NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Thomas Cortez – Valley City State (N.D.) – 6'0" – 180 lbs., Sophomore – kicker – Haiku, Hawaii – Cortez converted 4-of-5 PAT extra-point kicks in assisting the Vikings to a 37-12 home victory over the Comets, earning a share of NSAA Football conference title. He added a 27-yard field goal. Cortez averaged 51 yards on kickoffs (7 kickoffs for a total of 357 yards) and recorded a touchback.

Valley City State (5-4 overall record) avenged their early season loss with Mayville State with a 37-12 victory in Valley City, N.D. to gain a share of NSAA Football conference title with the University of Jamestown (N.D.) with a 3-1 conference record. The victory also snapped Comets' five-game winning streak and ended their season with an overall record of 6-4.
Mayville State and Dakota State are tied for third in the NSAA Football conference standings with a 2-2 conference record.
Presentation ended their 2013 campaign with a 35-17 road loss to Menlo (Calif.). The Saints finished their season with an overall record of 4-5 and 0-4 in the NSAA conference play.
Valley City State will play their final regular-season game on Saturday. The Vikings play a non-conference game at Menlo (Calif.)
