The Valley City State men's basketball hung with the No. 1 team in the country for a half Friday night, but Cardinal Stritch was able to pull away late and hand the Vikings a 69-56 loss.

AJ McDonald and Jeremy Ware each scored 15 points to lead VCSU's offense. The Viking shot 44 percent in the first half and trailed just 33-31 at the break. But VCSU's shooting fell to 31 percent in the second half as Cardinal Stritch built a lead.

The game was played in the opening round of a two-day tournament at Viterbo University. Valley City State will now play at 1 p.m. Saturday against Silver Lake College, who Viterbo beat in the opening round.

Cardinal Stritch is the defending national champion. The Wolves will move on to play Viterbo on Saturday for the tournament championship. The Wolves were led by 20 points from Garrett Borgrud.

Valley City State drops to 0-4 on the season. Cardinal Stritch improves to 3-1.
