Derek Elliott rushed for 260 yards and had four total touchdowns, but a slow start was too much for the Viking football team to overcome as they lost 38-28 Saturday at Menlo College in California.

Valley City trailed 24-0 at halftime before scoring all 28 of their points in the second half. After Elliott caught a short touchdown pass with about 3 minutes remaining, the Vikings trailed 38-28. But the two-point conversion attempt that could have made it a one-score game was no good and Menlo hung on for the 10-point victory.

Valley City State finishes the season with a 5-5 record. The Vikings won a share of the NSAA conference championship. Menlo College also finishes at 5-5.

Elliott’s big day wrapped up a record-breaking senior season for the Valley City native. His 95-yard touchdown run in the third quarter set a new career rushing record at VCSU. Elliott ends his career with 3,489 rushing yards, breaking the old mark of 3,332 held by John Overbey.

Menlo College’s offense was nearly unstoppable in the first half. The Oaks scored 24 unanswered points to open the game, and would finish with 400 rushing yards and 593 total yards of offense.

Senior linebacker Jake Thurston led the Viking defense with 11 total tackles, including eight solo tackles and a late forced fumble that set up VCSU’s final touchdown. Ethen Preston also added 11 tackles.
