The largest program on the Valley City State University campus is the elementary education program. Devin Poitra is a junior currently in the program.

Originally from Rolla, N.D., Devin chose VCSU “…because of the class sizes and the reputation of the education program.” He plans on graduating in the spring of 2018.

One aspect of the elementary program Devin hopes to use in his classroom is “making learning fun.” He especially enjoys the classes he’s had taught by Laurel Westby. “She makes learning fun,” says Devin. “I hope I can learn a thing or two from her.”

In addition to an elementary education degree, Devin is also pursuing a minor in athletic coaching. “I would like to be in a K-12 school after I graduate,” he says. “I could then teach in elementary school and coach in secondary school.”

Devin also is involved with different organizations on campus. He is currently the treasurer of Kappa Delta Pi (international honor society in education) and a member of both Alpha Lambda Delta (freshman honor society) and Sigma Alpha Pi (the National Society of Leadership and Success). He also assisted in freshman orientation on the VCSU campus.

Along with going to school, Devin also has a job at a local daycare in Valley City. When he’s not working or in class, Devin enjoys hanging out with friends and watching sports.

Whether in class or working in a practicum, Devin thinks he has what it takes to become a great teacher. We think he does, too, and we’re proud to have him here at VCSU.
