Mary Hagen Canine Memorial Scholarship (2000)
Established by her niece, Mary Bredeson, of Minneapolis, MN, this scholarship makes available two awards in the amount of $500 each, for upper-level students majoring in English Education. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate interest in theatre or journalism. The student must show good academic standing. Mary Canine served as professor in English, Theatre and Journalism at VCSU from 1946-1973. During her 50 years as an educator, she was very active in both acting and directing. At VCSU she served as the debate coach and an advisor to the Viking News. Under her leadership, the Viking News won several journalism awards as an outstanding collegiate newspaper. Mary Canine, often called 'K9', was an inspiration to her students and the staff at the Viking News. The J-Room (journalism room) became a home away from home for her students and staff of the newspaper.
