<title><![CDATA[SB: Will Selected DAC All Conference]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/kaleighw_xcnp6.JPG" border="0" height="180" width="240" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>Kaleigh Will a sophomore first baseman from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba has been selected to the Dakota Athletic Conference All Conference Team. Will was at or near the top in several statistical categories for the Vikings in 2008. Will hit for a .351 batting average with a team leading 50 runs scored and 59 hits and three triples. Will also collected nine doubles, four home runs and 25 rbi's, collected 17 walks and was 22 for 25 in stolen base attempts. She also played outstanding defense at first base garnering a .974 fielding percentage.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[SB: Hathaway DAC Player of the Week]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/krystalh_rkgj7.JPG" border="0" height="240" width="180" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>Krystal Hathaway a sophomore pitcher/designated player from Winnipeg, MB, Canada has been selected as the Dakota Athletic Conference Player of the Week for April 28-May 4. Hathaway batted .609 with a 1.043 slugging percentage in helping the Vikings to a 5-3 record. For the week, she was 14 of 23 with one double and three home runs, along with nine RBI, seven runs scored and one base-on-balls.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[FB: Vikings Name Captains for 2008 Season]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/brandt_admb2.jpg" border="0" height="240" width="180" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>Dustin Brandt and Jason Hollett have been selected as captains by their teammates for this upcoming fall. Dustin Brandt is a senior offensive lineman from Newburg, ND. He is three year starter and a 2007 2nd Team All-DAC player. Dustin has also been named to the DAC Scholar-Athlete team each year. He is a Business Administration major.[image2]Jason Hollett is a junior tight end from North Pole, AK. He is a returning starter and a 2007 2nd Team All DAC player. Jason is the brother of former Viking and 2007 team captain, Michael Hollett. <title><![CDATA[BAB: Three Viking Receive DAC Awards]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>Jason Beilke (SR, Valley City, ND) was a second team all conference selection as a pitcher. Beilke led the Vikings in strikeouts, games started, and innings pitched. Jason was a four year starter for the Vikes and has one year remaining to play quarterback for the football team. Jeremy Wiebe (SR, Steinbach, MB) was a Gold Glove recipient in right field as vote by the DAC coaches. One player from each position is selected to receive the gold Glove. Wiebe was a second team DAC selection his junior season and finished his career as a .314 hitter in four seasons.Chris Olson (SR, Livingston, MT) was a second team all conference selection at third base and a unanimous section for the Gold Glove. Olson Hit .328 and slugged .474 while hitting in the cleanup spot for the Vikes.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[SB: Vikings Go 2-2 in DAC Tourney; Finish Season]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The Valley City State University Viking softball team finished its season this weekend at the DAC Tournament in Jamestown but they wouldn't go down without a fight. The Vikings entered the tournament the #7 seed based on conference winning percentage and battled the number two seed Minot State in two losses and knocked out to higher ranked seeds in the process.#7 VCSU 2, #2 Minot State 4Minot State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first. The Vikings took a 2-1 lead on a Lacey Hauser two run home run, her first of the season in the top of the sixth. The Beavers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the sixth with a single that followed a leadoff double. Then with two out in the home half of the 7th, the Minot State catcher sent a Krystal Hathaway offering over the fence for the walk off victory. Hathaway threw all seven innings in the loss, surrendering three earned runs, on seven hits, four base on balls and nine strikeouts. The Vikings collected only three hits in the game, the Hauser round tripper and Hathaway was two for three at the plate.#7 VCSU 15, #6 Dakota State 1The Vikings played home run derby in the shortened five inning game, hitting six home runs as a team cruising to the second round victory. Cyndi Figol hit two blasts and Amanda Carter, Jane Pettit, Bre-Ann Robertson and Karisa Etter all hit four baggers as well in the route. For the game the Viking offense tallied 14 hits to the Lady Trojans four. Krystal Hathaway picked up the victory throwing three innings before being relieved by Etter in the final two of the game.#7 VCSU 6, #5 Mayville State 3Facing their second straight elimination game, the Vikings battled back from an early three to zero deficit to claim their second victory of the DAC tournament and stave off elimination. The Comets scored one in the bottom of the first and two in the second to stake a 3-0 lead before the Vikings got on board in the top of the third on a two out two run double by Cyndi Figol. Amanda Carter tied the game in the top of the third with a solo home run to center field. The Vikings scored the game winning runs on a two out rbi single up the middle by Kaleigh Will to make the score 5-3 and Krystal Hathaway added a solo home run in the top of the seventh for an insurance run. Hathaway picked up the win throwing all seven innings allowing only three Mayville State hits while walking three and striking out ten.#7 VCSU 4, #2 Minot State 9The Vikings ran out of steam facing and their DAC Tournament run came to an end on Sunday in a 9-4 loss to the Beavers. Minot State got on board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second before a line drive off the hip of starting pitcher Krystal Hathaway knocked her out of the third inning. The Beavers capitalized with a three run home run and scored four in the inning before Hathaway returned to record the final out of the inning. The Beavers added one more in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-0 lead but the Vikings were not done. After loading the bases in the top of the sixth, Krystal Hathaway sent the first pitch see saw over the center field fence for a grand slam, giving the Vikings new life. Karisa Etter relieved a spent Krystal Hathaway in the bottom of the sixth and was tagged with a three run home run that put the game out of reach for the Vikings. Five Viking collected single hits and Hathaway was tagged with the season ending loss.For the year the Vikings finished 25-26 on the season, tying the second highest win total in the programs history.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[FB: Vikings Complete Annual Youth Camp]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/thunderc_absn9.jpg" border="0" height="180" width="240" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>Viking Football player and coaches put on their annual youth football camp on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. Over 30 young football players entering grades 5-8 from Valley City and surrounding areas were on the practice field with the Vikings working on football skills and techniques.Coach McCulloch commented 'We had a great couple of days working with these guys. You could tell how much they love the game of football and wanted to learn from our players. It was another excellent opportunity for our players to spend time with young people in the community and they did a great job. We look forward to watching Thunder football this fall and seeing them in the stands on Saturdays.' <title><![CDATA[BAB: Seventh Inning Surge Lifts Vikings Over Dakota State]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The Trojans struck first today, but it was the Vikings who struck bigger. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, the Vikings used a five run seventh inning to beat Dakota State in the opening round of the Dakota Athletic Conference 9-4.The Viking offense came alive during the fifth inning barrage that included three home runs. In their final conference tourney Jeremy Weibe, Chris Olson, and Reid Arnold came up big in the pivotal fifth inning. Olson started off the home run brigade followed by the next batter Reid Arnold. Jeremy Wiebe capped off the scoring with a definitive three run homer to give the VIkes a 7-4 lead. The Vikings would score two more in the ninth giving them their final 9-4 win.Freshman Matt Gotwalt picked up his first third win of the year and his first post-season win. Gotwalt gave up four earned runs in seven innings on eleven hits. Gotwalt and the Viking defense forced the Trojans to strand nine runners compared to just three left on by the Vikings. Senior Jason Beilke picked up his second save of the year in two innings pitched giving up no runs on three hits while striking out three. With the win VCSU improves to 15-23 overall and will take on the Dickinson State at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[SB: Vikings Sweep to End Regular Season]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>On a windy afternoon in Moorhead, the Valley City State University Vikings took two from Concordia College to finish the regular season with a sweep. Valley City State University 15, Concordia College 9Concordia College jumped out to an early four to zero lead with two home runs off of Viking starter Karisa Etter in the home half of the first inning. The Vikings rallied in the top of the second to plate three of their own and scored in every remaining inning to take control of the game and seal a 15-9 victory. Offensively the Viking bats pounded out 16 hits led by Krystal Hathaway and Kaleigh Will who each hit four for five with one of Hathaway's hits being a two run home run, her second of the season. Bre-Ann Robertson and Alecia Stark also had two hits each for the Vikings. On the mound Etter picked up the victory throwing five innings of work before being relieved by Rachel Graboski who threw the sixth and Krystal Hathaway finished it off in the seventh.Valley City State 8, Concordia College 0The Vikings jumped on top this time scoring six in the top of the first and Krystal Hathaway cruised in the five inning game to pick up her seventh win of the season and third shutout of the year. Jane Pettit hit a solo home run as one of her two hits, her second of the season and Hathaway continued to hit well and helped herself hitting two for three. In her five innings of work, Hathaway struck out 10, walked one and allowed only three hits.With the sweep the Vikings finish the regular season at 23-24. The Vikings finished in sixth place in the DAC but because of winning percentage, are tagged with the seven seed heading into the conference tournament on Friday. The Vikings will play number two Minot State at 10:00 am in Jamestown.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[SB: Vikings Split Last DAC Doubleheader]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The bats went silent in game one for the Vikings versus Dakota State on Monday as they were shut out 3-0 before waking up the sticks and pounding out 16 hits for 17 runs in game two to win a 17-9 decision.Valley City State 0, Dakota State 3The Lady T's opened up the bottom of the first with two runs and it proved all they would need behind a solid pitching performance as Dakota Novotny limited the Viking hitters to six hits over seven innings of work to pick up the shutout. The Vikings had base runners many times but stranded six runners in scoring position in the loss. Bre-Ann Robertson collected two of the six Viking hits. Krystal Hathaway was tagged with the loss despite pitching well. In her seven innings of work Hathaway struck out seven and walked only one in giving up three earned runs on six hits.Valley City State 17, Dakota State 9The Viking bats came alive in the second game of the final DAC contest of the season as they out hit Dakota State 16 to 15 in the win. The Vikings scored in every inning but one, plating two in the first, two in the second, one in the third, five in fourth and sixth and two more in the seventh. Jane Pettit and Amanda Carter hit the ball hard for the Vikings, going four for five and two for four respectively. Carter's two hits were both solo shot home runs. Kaleigh Will had three hits including two doubles and a triple. Krystal Hathaway, Bre-Ann Robertson and Shana Powers also all collected two hits each. A trio of pitchers work the game for the Vikings. Rachel Graboski threw three and a third innings in the start to collect the win before being relieved by Karisa Etter. Etter threw one inning and was relieved by Krystal Hathaway who pitched the final two and two thirds innings.With the split the Vikings finish the DAC regular season at 7-16. They stand at 21-24 overall with a doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Game times are 4:00 and 6:00 pm.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[WBB: Women's Basketball Signs Two Transfers]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/abbyritt_dvld8.JPG" border="0" height="180" width="240" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>Valley City State University women's basketball head coach Jill DeVries announced today that Abby Rittenhouse, Burnsville, MN (St. Cloud State) and Caitlyn Wojahn, Milbank, SD (U. of Sioux Falls) have signed Dakota Athletic Conference letters of intent to continue their academic and basketball careers at VCSU.Rittenhouse, a 6'1' post player, transfers after completing her freshman year of eligibility at St. Cloud State University. She averaged 14 minutes of playing time in 28 games for the Huskies, averaging 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.'Abby is a great addition to our women's basketball program. She has great hands, solid footwork, and the ability to bring an offense presence in the paint for us next season.' commented Coach DeVries.Rittenhouse played her high school basketball at Burnsville high school (MN). She was a two-time team captain and two-time All-conference performer, named MVP, and All-State honorable mention as a junior. Wojahn, a 5'2' point guard, will join the Vikings after spending her freshman season at the University of Sioux Falls. She averaged 17 minutes of playing time in 30 games for USF, in a starting role for seven contests for the Cougars. Wojahn averaged 5.1 points 2.4 boards, 1.7 assists and 1.6 steals. Her 47 steals led USF in take-a-ways in 2008.'Caitlyn has the ability to change the complexity of a game with her tireless defense and outside shooting prowess. She isn't very big, but she plays big. She has the quicks to get to the rim and is a very good passer.' says DeVries.Wojahn is a Milbank, SD graduate selected to the All-conference team in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. <title><![CDATA[SB: Vikings Sweep Lady T's]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The VCSU Viking Softball team swung some big bats on Sunday to earn a sweep of the visiting Dakota State Lady T's. In game one the Vikings recorded thirteen hits for a 7-3 win before outslugging Dakota State in game two tallying a season high nineteen hits for a 18-12 victory.Valley City State 7, Dakota State 3Amanda Carter was perfect for the game, batting four for four with one rbi, while Krystal Hathaway and Kaleigh Will each went two for four to lead the Viking offense. The Vikings scored one in the top of the first and added one more in the top of the second before putting up crooked numbers in the fifth and sixth to tally their seven runs. Krystal Hathaway was cruising before Dakota State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth before leaving the game due to an injury. Karisa Etter relieved the last two innings to record the save. Hathaway recorded nine strikeouts, walked four and allowed two earned runs in five innings of work to pick up the win.Valley City State 18, Dakota State 12The Vikings completed the sweep on the afternoon in a game that saw a combined thirty runs and twenty nine hits. The Vikings jumped out early with six runs in the top of the first before adding one in the top of the third and three in the top of the fourth. The Lady T's plated two in the bottom of the first and second before erupting for eight in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-10 lead. The Vikings plated two runs with two out in the top of the fifth to tie the game before Alecia Stark put the Vikings up for good with her first career home run, a three run shot to left.Seven of the nine Viking starters collected more than one hit, led by Kaleigh Will hitting four for five with two doubles and a triple. Bre-Ann Robertson and Cora Mikkelson collected three hits a piece while Alecia Stark, Jane Pettit, Mandy Johnson and Lacey Hauser all garnered two hits for the game.Karisa Etter started and was tagged with eight earned runs in three and a third innings before being relieved by Bre-Ann Robertson. Robertson completed the game and picked up the win throwing three and two thirds, giving up four unearned runs, striking out two and allowing only two hits.With the sweep the Vikings improved to 20-23 overall and 6-15 in the DAC. It is the third straight 20 win season for the Vikings. The Vikings will play at home on Monday versus Dakota State in a rescheduled doubleheader from Saturday with game times at 3:00 and 5:00 pm.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[SB: Figol Ties Record in Viking Loss]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/cyndifig_whpd5.jpg" border="0" height="240" width="180" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>On a cold and windy day, the Sioux from University of North Dakota dialed long distance and used the long ball to beat the Vikings 18-8 in seven innings. UND hit seven home runs on the day and used two big innings to outslug the Vikings.Viking Starter Krystal Hathaway seemed to be in control with the Vikings leading 5-3 heading into the top of the fourth but the Sioux bats woke up with three home runs in the inning plating six. The Vikings would get one back in the fifth and two in the bottom of the seventh but the Sioux sent thirteen hitters to the plate in the top of the seventh and scored nine. Hathaway was relieved by Karisa Etter in the top of the seventh.Offensively, the Vikings pounded out nine hits of their own with Jane Pettit and Hathaway leading the way with three for four performances. Hathaway hit her first round tripper of the year, a two run home run in the bottom of the first. Cyndi Figol went two for four with two doubles and tied the single season doubles record at 16, previously held by Ruby Garza set in 2006.The second game of the doubleheader was due to cold and wind. With the loss the Vikings drop to 18-23 on the season. The Vikings will go on the road for their last six games of the regular season, four DAC games on Saturday and Sunday at Dakota State in Madison, SD before finishing the regular season at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN on Tuesday.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[BAB: Vikings Win Two of Three in Midweek Games]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The Vikings beat Presentation College 20-13 on Tuesday. Bryce Ingram, Chauncey Calhoun, and Jason Beilke each had four hits. Ingram knocked three doubles while Beilke added his first home run of the season. Taylor Nelson threw five innings allowing two hits to earn the win.In Thursday's double header against Northern State the Vikings took game one 6-5 and dropped the nightcap 5-25. In the double header Chris Olson had three doubles, Nick Spiess cracked his first home run, and Tanner Bombenger had four hits including two doubles. The Viking are scheduled to finish the conference season in Madison, SD vs Dakota State on Saturday and Sunday.</p>]]></description>
