BCHS lecture scheduled May 16

Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season #15 presents Nam Sabir speaking on "The Kurdish People in Post-War Iraq" on May 16, 2013 at 7:00 pm. The Kurdish people of northern Iraq are part of the largest ethnic group in the world without a country to call their own. The region known as Kurdistan is a mountainous area divided amongIraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey and Russia. It had no real defined borders until after World War I. The 35-40 million people who make up this group have faced years of suppression and hostility. This fact is most dramatically exemplified by the use of chemical weapons by Sadam Hussein on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988 that killed as many as 5,000 people. With a rich, vibrant culture tied to ancient roots, the Kurds are a proud people struggling to find peace in the modern world. Nam Sabir will be speaking on the changes in its economy, culture and the observed influences from America he has seen come to Iraq and the Kurdish people since the war. Sabir first spoke for the BCHS Season 10 lecture series in September 2007. He was last in Iraq in October 2012. All lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. They are free and open to the public.

VCSU students Dustin Slaamod and Allison Veselka presented papers at the Dakota History Conference in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Saturday, April 27. Held at Augustana College, the 45th annual Dakota History Conference attracted scholars and enthusiasts from around the region to examine topics of historical and cultural interest. Dustin Slaamod’s paper, "Français au Coeur: The Making of the Metís," examined the construction of Metís cultural identity and its shifting contours with regard to its indigenous and European elements. Allison Veselka’s paper, "The Great Father and His Children: Dakota War of 1862 and Government Interaction with Tribes," considered the changing relationship between the federal government and the Dakota peoples of central Minnesota during and in the aftermath of the Dakota War. Both students are inductees of the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society and active members of the VCSU History Club. Their participation at Augustana marks the return of VCSU students to the Dakota History Conference for the first time since 2008. They were accompanied by VCSU faculty Steven King and Anthony Dutton.
