<title><![CDATA[VB: Jill Noeske Receives All-Conference Honors]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/jillnoes_qfke6.jpg" border="0" height="240" width="180" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>Hometown talent, junior outside hitter Jill Noeske takes her spot on the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) All-Conference Volleyball Team. Noeske returned to the Vikings after a brief stint away from the game. She quickly became the 'goto' hitter for the Vikings, bring a very heavy hand with her. This season Jill managed to rack up 372 kills, ending with a .240 kill percentage and 49 total blocks. Noeske is an extremely hard worker for not only herself, but for the team as well. 'Jill is one of the most selfless athletes that I have ever had the opportunity to coach' says head volleyball coach Susan Kolbow. Jill is pursuing a Business Administration degree here at VCSU. <title><![CDATA[VB: Vikings End Season on a High Note]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The Vikings came out with something to prove in last night's match against Mayville State University. They made quick work of the Comets, beating them in three sets (25-17, 27-25, 25-18). With this win the Vikings secure a second place finish in the DAC with a 6-3 record and 12-23 overall. Sophomore setter Anna Neufled has an outstanding night, as she finished with 53 set assists, 9 digs, and one block assist on the night. The Viking offense was out in full force, hitting at a 0.345 as a team. Sophomore middle hitter Aurissa Martens had 16 kills on 21 attempts (.667), senior Rebekah DePesa had 12 kills (.267), and junior Jill Noeske added 10 kills. As another season comes to an end, the Viking volleyball program would like to thank its three seniors for all of their hard work, dedication, and leadership over the years. Libero Mardee Lander, outside hitter Rebekah DePesa, and middle hitter KaDee Melby all played important roles in the starting lineup this year and will be missed. Best of luck to all of you in the future.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[VB: Vikings Perform a Clean Sweep Homecoming Weekend]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>On Saturday after the homecoming football game, the Viking volleyball team competed against Dakota State University. This was the going to be the deciding match between the two teams, as each team won in five sets earlier this season. During her pre-game speech Coach Kolbow said, 'May the best team win!' The Vikings came out on fire Saturday evening beating the Trojans 25-8. The momentum did not stop there, they followed the first set with two more victories 25-18, 25-23. The Vikings offense was unstoppable, with five hitters hitting above .290. Freshmen right side hitter Kaitlyn Heuring and sophomore middle hitter Aurissa Martens had 6 kills each, senior middle hitter KaDee Melby racked up 11, junior outside hitter Jill Noeske added 12, and leading the pack was senior outside hitter Bekah DePesa with 14 kills on the night. According to Kolbow, 'Anna did a great job of spreading the ball around and feeding the hot hitter at the right time.' Helping out the offense was the Viking serve receive, 'offense would not have been so successful without the phenomenal passes they were getting.' Adds Coach Kolbow. The Vikings had another tough match on Sunday when they faced Dakota Wesleyan University, as the Tigers beat the Vikings in four sets at the Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell, SD in early September. As in past tradition between the two teams the game scores were very close. This time the Vikings were able to come out on top, winning the match in three sets 25-19, 25-22, 25-23. 'There was nothing flashy about this match, the team just played well together' says Coach Kolbow. The Vikings are playing extremely well at home. They are hoping to take that momentum with them on the road as they travel back to Mayville, ND for the conference crossover weekend. Friday October 7th the Vikings with take on the Jimmies of Jamestown College at 5:30 pm. Then on Saturday they will gear up for Dickinson State University at 2:00 pm and prepare for a much needed rematch against host school Mayville State University at 6:00 pm.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[VB: Vikings Take Jimmies in Five]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/bekahdep_xdpo7.jpg" border="0" height="240" width="180" style="float: right; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image"><p>Graichen Gymnasium was packed with Viking and Jimmie fans alike, continuing the fierce rivalry between the two schools. The match set the attendance record for Viking volleyball at 388, surpassing the 2009 record of 336, also against Jamestown College. In front of a record crowd the Valley City State University Viking volleyball team upsets the Jimmies of Jamestown College in five sets last night. After a slow start, losing set one 21-25 the Viking bounced back to take sets two and three, 25-19 and 25-17. After being down two sets to one the Jimmies answered with a win in set four 19-25, forcing the match into the fifth and final set. Set five was a battle to 15. It all came down to the last play of the match with the Vikings leading 14-13. Lead by amazing crowd support, senior outside hitter Bekah DePesa cashed in her 11th kill of the night to end the match. DePesa and senior middle hitter KaDee Melby took charge offensively, combining for 19 kills on the night. Outstanding defense was a team effort last night with digs by; red shirt freshman Trisha Goerts (9), freshman outside hitter Jenna Kost (10), DePesa (11), sophomore setter Anna Neufeld (12), and senior libero Mardee Lander rounded out the list with 13. This win moves the Viking to 2-0 in conference play and 6-11 overall. The Vikings hit the road this weekend where they will face division two Minot State University on Friday at 7:00 pm. Saturday the Vikings will travel to Madison, SD to take on Dakota State University at 1:00 pm.</p><img src="http://www.vcsu.edu/news/images/mardeela_lwwj1.jpg" border="0" height="240" width="180" style="float: left; margin: 0px; padding-left: 5px; padding-bottom: 5px;" alt="Story Image">]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[VB: Vikings Start Conference Play with a Win]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The Vikings traveled to Dickinson, ND last night to take on the Blue Hawks of Dickinson State University. After a brief slow start the Vikings made quick work of the Hawks, beating them in 3 straight sets; 26-24, 25-16, 25-19. It was an offensive battle as both teams' hitting percentages were above .325. Sophomore middle hitter Aurissa Martens lead the offensive charge hitting a .500 with 6 kills and 0 attacking errors on 12 attempts. 'The outsides were a force last night.' Said head coach Susan Kolbow. Bekah DePesa had 12 kills on the night, completing the match with a .435 hitting percentage and Jill Noeske backed her up with 11 kills, 1 error on 25 attempts, hitting .400. On a defensive note senior libero Mardee Lander managed to rack up 20 digs in the three set match. The Vikings are back at home this weekend, Friday they will host a double header. Play will begin at 5:00 pm when Mayville State University will take on South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Then at 7:00 pm the Vikings are set to take on the Hardrockers. On Saturday the Vikings welcome Black Hills State University for a 2:00 pm match.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[VB: Vikings Wrap Up Pre-Season Tournaments]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>This weekend the Valley City State University women's volleyball team finished their pre-season tournaments in La Crosse, WI at the Viberbo University Classic. The opening match of the tournament the Vikings faced off against pre-seasons nationally ranked number 15, Northwestern College. The Vikings fought hard but ultimately lost in four sets; 22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25. Kill leaders were outside hitter Jill Noeske with 12 kills and senior middle hitter KaDee Melby had 11 kills. The last match of the day was against host school Viterbo University. The V-Hawks offense was too much for the Vikings to handle they lost in three straight sets.Day two of the tournament started out with a tight battle against Hannibal-LaGrange. The Vikings brought their blocking game, as they stated nine team blocks. The Trojans proved to be too much for the Vikings to handle, beating them in five sets; 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 12-15. The Vikings bounced back and beat Waldorf College in three quick sets, finishing the tournament 1-3. The Vikings continue their road trips on Wednesday September 14th where they will travel to Dickinson State University to take on the Blue Hawks at 7:00 PM. Then, they will return home for the weekend to test their skills against two division II schools. Friday night the Vikings host South Dakota School of Mines and Technology at 7:00 PM. Saturday the Vikings welcome Black Hills State University for a 2:00 PM match.</p>]]></description>

<title><![CDATA[VB: Vikings Split at Corn Palace Classic]]></title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>The Valley City State University volleyball team competed in the 2nd annual Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell, SD this weekend. The Vikings left the tournament with two wins and two loses. On Friday morning the Vikings faced Montana State-Northern and did not have the offense to keep up. They lost in three sets; 19-25, 11-25, 17-25. Friday evening the Vikings bounced back to win a tough five set match against Dakota State University. 'We found our offense!' Says head coach Susan Kolbow. The team's hitting percentage was .288. Leading the offensive charge were junior outside hitter Jill Noeske (.514), sophomore middle hitter Aurssia Martens (.423), and senior outside hitter Bekah DePesa (.390). Helping out on defense stood senior libero Mardee Lander with 28 digs, and freshmen defensive specialist Trisha Goerts added 16. Scores: 17-25, 28-26, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13.Saturday's matches served up another split for the Vikings. The first match of the day the Vikings defeated York in four sets; 25-23, 25-11, 20-25, 25-19. The team managed to rack up nine blocks on the match and had four hitters in double digits for kills. The tournament ended in a heated battle against host school, Dakota Wesleyan University. The Vikings fell short losing in four close sets; 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 20-25. The volleyball team will be back in action September 9-10 in Wisconsin at the Viterbo University tournament where they will wrap up the pre-season schedule.</p>]]></description>
