Department of Music Defining Commitments


The Valley City State University Department of Music:

  • Provides superior training for public school music teachers
  • Assists musicians to perform at their highest possible level of ability
  • Develops in students a broad understanding of music within the context of a liberal arts education
  • Leads in innovative online music programs
  • Contributes to the cultural environment of campus and community


The VCSU Department of Music will be a regional leader in music education by providing a campus-based music curriculum that merges best practices of the past while embracing technological and pedagogical innovations of the 21st century. The Department will be a national leader in distance music education by offering distinctive degree programs in the online format.

Student Learning Outcomes

VCSU Music Majors will:

  1. Demonstrate competence in basic musicianship skills. (Musicianship)
  2. Develop requisite performance skills as a soloist and ensemble member, consistent with the objectives of their degree plan. (Performance)
  3. Interpret and analyze music from a variety of cultures and time periods. (Analysis)
  4. Demonstrate teaching skills consistent with the objectives of their degree plan. (Pedagogy)
