VALLEY CITY, N.D. : The Vikings defense decided to get into the scoring act Saturday. Besides limiting the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets to only 180 yards in total offense, the Vikings "D" scored two touchdowns and set up another one with a turnover.

The tempo was set early on a windy day on Lokken Field as the Yellow Jackets were forced to punt into a stiff wind after their initial three plays, giving the Vikings good feel position in Jacket territory. VCSU QB Mark Fabian quickly found Steve Battle down the heart of the Jacket defese for a 44 yard scoring strike. Jay Dukes added the first of five extra points to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead at the 12:13 mark in the first.

The next score was set up as Jon Kleinke sacked Jacket QB Josh Gerik and caused a fumble that was recovered by Nate Pecoraro. On the next play Fabain found tight end Natan Payne in the endzone from 11 yards out to make it 14-0.

With the start of the second quarter and the Viking offense struggling into the wind, the defense continued their strong play as defensive end Frank Sowtich stepped in front of a Kelly Meeker screen pass and scampered untouched 27 yards for a touchdown to end the first half scoring.

The Vikings were unable to move the ball again with the wind this time in the second half and a fifty yard punt by Jay Dukes put the Jackets in a hole going into the wind. Josh Gerik then found receiver Kirk McLaughlin on a short five yard crossing route, McLauglin was hit and seperated from the ball by saftey Conrad Olsonoski. Linebacker Andrew Thompson picked up the loose ball and race 25 yards in the endzone to put the Vikings up 28-0 going into the fourth quarter.

Black Hills State (0-3, 0-2) got its only score on a nine-yard pass from Josh Gerik to Mike Johns with 9:32 left in the fourth quarter.
Fabian connected with Battle again in the fourth quarter on a 25 yard strike to make the final 35-6.

Fabian finished the day 12 of 25 for 168 and 3 touchdowns as Battle was on the receiving end of 5 passed for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Tom Johnson added 51 yards rushing on 11 carries. Sowitch capped off a great day as he recorded five tackles including 2 for loss, forced a fumble, had a quarterback sack, and knocked down three passes to go along with his interception return.

VCSU goes to 3-0 (2-0 DAC-10) while Black Hills drops to 0-3 (0-2). The Vikings travel to Jamestown College next week.
