The Valley City State basketball teams suffered a pair of road losses Saturday night at Dakota State University.
The Viking women fell 71-64 while the men dropped a 65-51 contest. Both were conference games in the North Star Athletic Association.
Valley City State's women are now 12-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Viking men drop to 13-12 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Women: Dakota State 71, VCSU 64
Valley City State rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to take a 55-54 lead, but Dakota State would hold off the Vikings down the stretch for a 71-64 victory.
BreeAna Olson scored 19 points for the Lady T's, including an 11-for-12 performance at the free throw line.
Valley City State was led by 12 points from Sierra Even and 11 off the bench by Ashli Lee. Stephanie Pedersen added nine points and Courtney Dixon scored eight. VCSU's leading scorer Brittany Lehner scored eight points but pulled down 15 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. VCSU out-rebounded Dakota State 55-40, including a season-high 32 offensive rebounds by the Vikings.
VCSU was able to put up 85 shots compared to just 44 for Dakota State. But the Vikings made only 31 percent (26-85) while Dakota State made 43 percent (19-44) from the field. The Lady T's had a big edge at the free throw line, going 30-for-38 at the charity stripe while VCSU went just 8-for-16. The Vikings were called for 25 fouls while Dakota State committed just 14 fouls.
Dakota State improves to 11-17 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Dakota State is now third and VCSU is fourth in the North Star standings with two games remaining.
Men: Dakota State 65, VCSU 51
In a battle of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the North Star Athletic Association, Dakota State pulled away in the second half Saturday night for a 65-51 win over the Vikings.
The Trojans led just 26-23 after a low-scoring first half, but used a decisive run midway through the second half to pull away.
Yusuf Vinson posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Dylan Hale added 18 points for Dakota State.
AJ McDonald scored 15 points to lead Valley City State. Aaron Duske added his own double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Vikings struggled to make shots throughout the night, and finished 22-for-64 (34 percent) from the field. VCSU attempted just six total free throws and made two.
Dakota State went 16-for-28 at the free-throw line and 23-for-58 (40 percent) from the field.
Both the Vikings and Trojans are now 4-2 in conference play and have split their two meetings. They are tied for second in the conference standings with two games remaining. VCSU finishes Feb. 19 at Jamestown and Feb. 22 at home against Presentation College. Dakota State will finish with games at Mayville State on Feb. 19 and a home game against Jamestown on Feb. 22.
