Comets Keep Vikings Number
VALLEY CITY, ND -- For whatever reason, the Mayville State Women’s Basketball team just seems to have the Vikings number this year. It was apparent last month when the Comets defeated VCSU handily by the score of 68-32 in Mayville. The suspicion was again confirmed Thursday night as the Comets took out the Vikings for a second time, on this occasion by a final of 70-51 at the Osmon Fieldhouse.

Although the Vikings (7-8, 12-13) did not shoot well, (35% on the night) they did hang close with the Comets (5-11, 8-18) during the first half, leading a good portion of the way until a jumper by Mandy Fladmark with three second remaining gave Mayville a 29-28 lead at halftime. Viking sophomore Loni Hall played well underneath in the first half, leading all scorers with ten points at the break.

The Comets and Vikings traded baskets to open the second half, with VCSU grabbing what would be their last lead of the game when Sarah Heringer hit a jumper with 16:00 remaining to bring the score to 34-32 in favor of the Vikings. A 10-0 run by the Comets with 4:20 left in the left in the half opened up the game and gave Mayville a 59-43 lead. The Vikings efforts to foul the Comets late in the game didn’t pan out as they hit their shots from the line and won by 19 points.

Hall ended the game with 19 points and 9 rebounds but was the only Viking in double-figures offensively as Jackie O’Neill was next in line with 8 points. The Vikings were outscored 41-23 in the second half and were only able to get to the free throw line a total of six times on the night.

Mayville State was led by Steph Meggers and Fardowsa Ahmed who each scored 16 points on the night. Jessica Haugen and Cassie Leraas each did their part as well, adding 13 and 11 points respectively.

The Vikings will wrap the regular season up next weekend when they travel to South Dakota Tech and Black Hills State.
