Mayville, ND - A big day at the plate by Bryan Carter was not quite enough for the visiting Vikings to sweep Mayville State in DAC-10 baseball on Wednesday.

Carter hit two home runs, including a grand slam and had seven rbi's on the day before the Comets rallied from 7-0 and 8-3 deficits to beat the Vikings 9-8 in the nightcap.

Dustin Grabowska's first pitch home run leading off the eight inning broke a 1-1 tie in the opener. Carter followed with a 3-run shot to give the Vikings a 5-1 lead to protect.

David Skogen threw two innings of hittless ball in relief of Kory Foss retired the Comets in quick fashion in the bottom of the eighth giving the Vikings the win.

Foss scattered five hits over six innings before leaving with a blister in the sixth. Skogen (5-3) walked two and struck out two in his stint.

The Vikings jumped out early in game two. Casey Huntsinger's two-run blast gave the Vikings a quick lead in the first.

With two outs in the third inning, Colin Thilmony was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Doug Lonski single to center for one of his three hits in the game. A walk to Huntsinger loaded the bases and set the stage for Carters home run.

An rbi single by Lonski pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fourth before the Comets mounted their comeback on starter Jason Beilke.

The Comets made it 7-3 on a home run by Nigel Andison in the fifth. In the sixth, MSU scored 6 runs on five hits, the biggest blow was a three run home run with two outs by Brent Wandler off of Gavin Black making the final 9-8.

VCSU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on an error, a double by Matt Huonder and a hit batter before Jeremy Wiebe struck out to end the threat.

Valley City (11-14) and Mayville remain tied at 8-6 in the DAC-10 standings. VCSU visits Concordia College today.
