VALLEY CITY, N.D. -The Northern State baseball team scored the winning run in the last inning to win the first game, but Valley City State put 14 runs on the scoreboard in the second game to earn a split in a college baseball doubleheader.

Northern won 6-5 in extra innings in the first game, but lost 14-1 in the nightcap Tuesday on the road.

The first game was tied at 5-all after seven innings. Neither team could score in the seventh or eighth innings, as VCSU squandered two great scoring chances only to see the Wolves tally one run in the top of the ninth. Owen Olson led off with a single and Deacon Burns hit an RBI double.

NSU pitcher Joel Backous gave up just five runs and scattered 12 hits in eight innings for the win. Relief pitcher Joe Dinger took to the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning and picked up a save by getting the last three outs and stranding a runner on first.

At the plate Backous hit a double and Wes Fisbeck connected on a home run.

The Valley City State offense dominated the second game as the Vikings jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, including a three-run blast by Casey Huntsinger in the first, and added seven more runs in the fourth.

Jayme George cruised through five innings allowing only one run to raise his record to 4-0 on the season.

"The second game they came out and really swung the bats well," NSU coach Curt Fredrickson said. "We didn’t pitch well and we got behind.

Valley City State enters DAC-10 tournament play this Thursday when they take on the host Minot State at 4:00. VCSU finished the regular season tying a school record for wins in a season with 27 established by the 1998 team.
