Valley City.The VCSU men’s basketball team will attempt to start the season with back to back victories Tuesday evening November 13, when the Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers come to town. The contest is scheduled for an 8:00pm CST start following the women’s game at 6:00pm.
VCSU opened the season with a 75-74 victory over the University of Sioux Falls last Friday evening. Paul Henderson provided last second heroics by converting the winning 3-point field goal with 0.6 seconds remaining. Henderson finished with 17 points. Austin McCullough led all scorers with 19 points and Ed Meyer chipped in with 16. Steve Strittmatter snared 11 rebounds and dished out 7 assists.
"The team played with verve and passion last Friday evening" Viking Coach Adam DeHaan commented. "Our effort masked any mistakes we committed. I am pleased the players’ effort was rewarded with a victory.
DWU has started the season 1-3. Two seniors return for the youthful Tigers. Austin Ledeboer (6-5) was selected as an NAIA 3rd team All-American last year and is currently averaging 25.3ppg and 6 rebounds per contest. Richard Crow Eagle (6-0) is contributing 13.8ppg and shooting 40% from the 3-point line.
"Coach Martin runs a great program" DeHaan continued. Ledeboer and Crow Eagle have been with him and are great leaders for the young team. They will come in here and play with great enthusiasm. We need to match that enthusiasm and sustain sound play to earn a victory.
