The Viking baseball team has made a habit of winning the close ones this season and today was more of the same. After dropping the opener 5-1 the Vikes battled to a split with an extra inning 3-2 victory in game two.

The Mayville State pitching staff held VCSU to just five hits and one run in nine innings. Braden Raskob-Smith hit his first homerun of the season providing the Viking's only offense. VCSU starter Matt Gottwalt took the loss in his first start if the season after working out of the bullpen to begin the year.

In game two Jason Beilke held the Comets to two runs on three hits through seven strong innings of work. Beilke struck out ten and walked three while getting a no decision. The Viking offense played small ball and scored one run in the fifth, sixth, and eighth. Tony Forster led off the eighth with a double to right center and Jeremy Wiebe came through with a two out single to plate pinch runner Nick Spiess. The winning run came after reliever Chauncey Calhoun posted a zero in the eighth.

The Viking are back in action against Jamestown College this Saturday (Jamestown) and Sunday (Valley City) with double headers starting at 1:00 PM both days.
