The Trojans struck first today, but it was the Vikings who struck bigger. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, the Vikings used a five run seventh inning to beat Dakota State in the opening round of the Dakota Athletic Conference 9-4.
The Viking offense came alive during the fifth inning barrage that included three home runs. In their final conference tourney Jeremy Weibe, Chris Olson, and Reid Arnold came up big in the pivotal fifth inning. Olson started off the home run brigade followed by the next batter Reid Arnold. Jeremy Wiebe capped off the scoring with a definitive three run homer to give the VIkes a 7-4 lead. The Vikings would score two more in the ninth giving them their final 9-4 win.
Freshman Matt Gotwalt picked up his first third win of the year and his first post-season win. Gotwalt gave up four earned runs in seven innings on eleven hits. Gotwalt and the Viking defense forced the Trojans to strand nine runners compared to just three left on by the Vikings. Senior Jason Beilke picked up his second save of the year in two innings pitched giving up no runs on three hits while striking out three.
With the win VCSU improves to 15-23 overall and will take on the Dickinson State at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
