VCSU lost the battle for the "Paint Bucket" 21-24 to Jamestown College on Saturday. Seniors Jason Beilke and Chauncey Calhoun again had outstanding games on the offensive side of the ball. Beilke passed for 347 yards and 3 TD's while Calhoun had eight receptions for 189 and 2 TD's.
A hard fought rivalry game was expected and that is what the crowd saw between VCSU and JC. The Jimmies won the time of possession battle and dominated in the running game, but the Vikings answered with big plays through the air to keep the game in doubt into the final seconds.
JC was trying to put the game on ice in the final minute when a fourth down pass by Kittell was intercepted by Michael Webber. It looked as if Weber may go the distance with his return but Kittell tripped him up before Weber could reach the Jimmie half of the field. After moving the ball to the JC 36 yard line with six seconds left on the clock, and mulling the possibility of a 53 yard field goal attempt, the Vikes opted to go to the well one more time but the last second pass from Beilke to Calhoun was knocked to the ground by two Jimmie defenders.
Jamestown College opened the scoring on a 36 yard field goal by Nate Nygaard.
VCSU took the lead halfway through the first quarter on a 67 yard scoring strike from Beilke to Calhoun.
JC led 10-7 after a 24 yard touchdown reception from Josh Kittell to Josh Ewalt.
VCSU took a 14-10 halftime lead on a second Beilke to Calhoun touchdown hookup, this time from 26 yards out.
JC scored consecutive touchdowns to open the third quarter on a Kittell touchdown pass and a Jay Tweed touchdown run.
VCSU closed the gap to 21-24 on a 54 yard pass play this time from Beilke to Dan Hill.
