The Valley City State Baseball team returned from their spring trip in Brownsville, Texas with a record of 4-9 and a better understanding of the type of team they have and what they are capable of. The Vikings began the road trip in Fremont, Nebraska and played three games against Dana College and one against Midland Lutheran. After dropping the both games on day one in Fremont, the Vikings bounced back and swept a doubleheader against Dana to claim their first two wins of the year before heading to Texas.
Once the Vikings arrived in Brownsville, Texas they were scheduled to play seven games in four days, three against Fisher College from Boston, Massachusetts and four against host UT-Brownsville. The Vikings did not have an answer at for UT-Brownsville all week, but were able to win 2 out of 3 games against Fisher and Head Coach Casey Olney is encouraged by what he saw during the trip: 'Obviously we are disappointed with the record so far, but we were able to gain a lot of experience and I think our young team is now better prepared for our conference schedule.'
After 13 games the teams duo of catchers Justin Connell and Garrett Jackson have impressed so far hitting .379 and .409 respectively. Other offensive leaders include infielder Ian Jansen who is hitting .296 and outfielder Matt Borgford who is hitting .286. On the mound Taylor Nelson has impressed giving the Vikings three quality starts on the season and striking out 13 with a 3.45 ERA. Shane Schoeneberg threw well in his only start shutting out Fisher College in a 13-0 Viking victory. Dan Maurer and Roberto Rodriguez have had good moments in their outings as starters. Olney is has also been pleased with what he has seen from his closer, Grant Kragness.
The Vikes are scheduled to play Dickinson State this Friday and Saturday in Dickinson, ND. The games will be the conference openers for VCSU.
