The Viking baseball program was well represented this year at the North Dakota Class B State Legion Baseball Tournament held in Beulah, ND by Valley City, Enderlin, and Casselton. Viking Baseball has ties with 3 players and 5 coaches who participated in the state tournament.
Valley City Post #60 (19-13); Section 7 Champions
The coaching staff of Valley City Post #60 was comprised of current VCSU Assistant Coach Sam Bjorling, who is the Head Coach of Post #60. Bjorling's assistant this summer was former VCSU standout Jason Beilke who played for the Vikings from 2005-2008. Beilke was named pitcher of the year for VCSU in 2008. Also representing the Vikings from Post # 60 was Derek Zitzow who will be a RS Freshman this fall for the Vikings. Zitzow had an excellent summer batting .396 with 29 RBI, 20 SB's and went 8-2 on the mound with a 3.40 ERA and 90 K's in 57.2 innings pitched. Post #60 qualified for the tournament by defeating Harvey 14-1 in the Section 7 Championship. They went 0-2 in the tournament losing to Casselton and Enderlin in the opening rounds.
Enderlin Post #219 (41-9) Section 1 Champions; State Tournament Runner-Up
Viking baseball alum Kevin Bratland ('89), Head Coach of Enderlin Post #219, took his team to within one game of a state championship. Post #219 beat the Fargo Bombers to win the section 1 title and then proceeded to overcome an a loss in the opening round of the state tournament to make it all the way to the championship game before falling to Lamoure. Two of the key players for Enderlin this year were Zach Michaelson, who will be a redshirt freshman next fall and Kyle Langland who will be a freshman next fall for the Vikings. STATS FOR ZACH AND KYLE. Their Head Coach Kevin Bratland played was a member of some very successful teams during his playing career at VCSU that included a conference championship in 1987. Bratland was also a member of the 1988 team which broke many school records like most hits (407), most RBI's (285), most HR's (56), and most runs scored (324). During Bratland's senior season the team set a new school doubles mark (78). Bratland's assistant coach Logan Midthun is also currently a member of the Vikings baseball team
Casselton Post #15 (35-10) Section 3 Champions; 3rd Place State Tournament Finishers
VCSU Alum and Casselton Head Coach Scott Radloff ('82) has had a tremendous amount of success during his time at Casselton that was capitalized by a state championship in 2008. This year Radloff's team continued their dominance by rolling through the regular season with a (25-10) record and 3rd place finish at the state tournament. While Radloff's success as a coach is impressive, his playing career at VCSU was even more remarkable. During his 4 year career at VCSU (1979-1982) the team won two conference championships and he compiled many all-time and single season records. Radloff currently holds the career batting average mark at .387 and the career RBI record with 131, and also holds the single season RBI record with 52 in 1980. He was also named the conference's most valuable graduating senior in 1982 and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds that same year.
