Vikings Swept on Final Day with Dakota State

Valley City--When you give up 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning in the first game of a double-header, it's going to be a long day.
The Viking baseball team dropped their final two conference games with Dakota State in Madison, SD, Saturday, losing 29-19 in game one, and 6-4 in game two. They dropped all of the four-game series.
The tone was set by a first inning at-bat by the Trojans that saw two three-run homers and a grand slam. The Vikings needed three pitchers to get out of the jam, after starting pitcher Dan Maurer injured his throwing shoulder ten pitches into the game.
The Vikings managed four in the second, third, and sixth, and six in the seventh, but Dakota State tacked on 15 more by the time the smoke from the slugfest settled, winning 29-19. The Vikings used six pitchers to get through the bloodbath.
Colin Waldner (Fr., Altona, MB, pictured right) led the day offensively, going 4-4 with a homer and scoring four times. Justin Connell (Jr., Bismarck, ND) was 3-6 with three runs, and Josh Evans (So., Hayfield, MN) drove in five runs with two hits.
The Vikings were outdueled 6-4 in the nightcap. The Vikings entered the seventh down 6-2, and managed to rally for a pair in the final inning.
Preston Jensen (Fr., Valley City, ND) was 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Vikings.
The Vikings start the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) season 0-4, and play a double-header at Jamestown College Tuesday afternoon.
