Valley City--The Viking baseball team broke into the win column with an impressive sweep of Dordt, IA in Tempe, AZ yesterday.
The Vikings used a superb pitching performance by Taylor Nelson (Jr., Ramsey, MN) to take the first game, then survived four errors by breaking out the bats for a game two win, taking the games 7-3 and 8-4 over the Defenders.
Nelson showed command of his pitches, scattering seven hits over six innings, walking just one while striking out five in earning his first win of the season. Yet, he trailed after four-and-a-half innings 1-0.
Valley City State finally broke out the bats, sending 12 men to the plate in the home half of the fifth. The Vikings strung together five hits, including an RBI double by Tanner Bombenger (Jr., Fargo, ND), and they took advantage of an error, two walks and a hit batsman for a six-run inning.
The Vikings added a run in the sixth, with Dordt scratching out a pair against reliever Derek Zitzow (So., Valley City, ND) in the sevcnth for the 7-3 result.
In game two, the Vikings struck for five runs in the third, running together six singles, with Brendan Scherer (So., Winnipeg, MB) breaking the inning open with a two-RBI single to end the inning. The Vikings led 6-1 after three frames.
It was all that starter Ryan Shaw (So., Cardale, MB) would need. While suffering a few control problems, he allowed just three unearned runs on five hits through five, striking out six and walking four. Zach Noriega (So., Fargo, ND) threw two innings of hitless ball in relief, allowing another unearned run for the 8-4 win.
