Viking Baseball Drops a Pair with Bluehawks
By Ryan Cunningham NewsDakota.com
Valley City--The Viking baseball team just did not have enough offense in its first date at home this season.
The Vikings were swept by Dickinson State 9-2 and 5-4 Saturday afternoon at Charlie Brown Memorial. They were rained out on Sunday, and will make those games up today, with first pitch scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
Bluehawk pitching limited the Vikings to just five hits in the first game, with Roberto Gonzalez (Brentwood, CA) tossing six innings of four-hit baseball, striking out seven.
The lone Viking runs of the game came from a two-run home run by Michael Danielson (So., New London, MN), who entered the weekend as the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) Player of the Week. Danielson finished with two of the Vikings five hits.
Dan Maurer (Sr., Klamath Falls, OR) took the loss, allowing four hits and four walks in four innings.
The Vikings competed behind 10 hits in the second game, but came up short 5-4 in the nine-inning nightcap.
Patrick Vandoorne (Fr., Boissevain, MB) had three hits for the Vikings, while Josh Evans (Jr., Hayfield, MN), Preston Jenson (So., Valley City, ND) and Matt Borgford (Sr., Pinawa, MB) all had two hits each.
Viking starter Jack Maeshiro (So., Culver City, CA) gave up 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work. Dickinson State had 12 hits in the game.
The Vikings fall to 4-2 in DAC play, tied with 5-3 Mayville State for second place behind the Bluehawks.
