Vikings Salvage Last Game with Bluehawks
By Ryan Cunningham NewsDakota.com
Valley City--The Viking baseball team managed to pull out a win in the final game of a four-game set with Dickinson State yesterday, taking the back end of a double header 8-3 after dropping the front end 13-4
The Vikings rallied in the final game, scoring eight runs on 16 hits, after a meltdown allowed a tight game to get away in the first effort yesterday.
Dickinson State scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie after the Vikings had scored three in the fifth. A pair of walks, along with a pair of errors and a hit batsmen combined with seven Blue Hawk hits in the inning to blow the game open.
Preston Jensen (So., Valley City, ND) had three hits to lead the Vikings offensively.
The Vikings used a 16-hit attack in the nightcap, and scored the first eight runs of the game to take control of the game, and the pitching stood up after that.
Jensen had three more hits, with Patrick Vandoorne and Matt Borgford also tallying three knocks. Borgford had two doubles, with Jensen adding a double and Vandoorne a triple. The trio drove in half of the Vikings' runs.
Taylor Nelson worked 6.2 innings, giving up just five hits, striking out five. Derek Zitzow (So., Valley City, ND) worked 2.1 innings of three-hit relief to end the game, holding the Blue Hawks scoreless.
The Vikings remain tied with Mayville State for second place in Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) play at 5-3, a half-game ahead of Jamestown College. The Vikings host the Jimmies in non-league games Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
