The Viking Harriers went north to compete at Minot State University at Wild Wood Golf Course in Burlington, ND.

The Viking men had a break through meet as a team in many respects. They improved upon closing the time between the first man and the fifth man to ninety seconds, with our first man posting a faster time than the previous meet.

Closing the gap enabled the men's team to beat long time North Dakota rivals Jamestown College and Minot State University. This is the first time the men's team has beaten these two schools since the program was reinstated three years ago.

For the first time this season, Richard Wright led the men's squad finishing 11th with a time of 27:43. Jose Garcia backed up Wright in 15th place, with a time of 28:14. Freshmen Malik Jackson was VCSU's 4th man in posting his first sub 29/8km with a time of 28:51.

The women's team continues to be a small band of sisters, but also showed improvement in their performances on the trails. Anna Fuka once again lead the team over the 5km course finishing 13th with a time of 20:39. She was followed by Summer Romine and Krista Briss who finished 21st and 24th, posting times of 21:17 and 21:30. The women's team also welcomed newcomer freshmen Jenna Coghlan of Valley City. Jenna was originally recruited to VCSU to throw the Javelin (5th at the 2012 North Dakota State High School track & field championships) but she also enjoys running to stay in shape and decided to come out for cross-country this fall. Jenna placed 50th with a time of 24:47 in her first cross-country race ever.

Both teams have this weekend off, but will be competing at the University of Minnesota at the 27th Annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday September 29, 2012.
